Acme Law & Legal

Acme Law & Legal, LLP is a large, fictitious law firm with offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco. Acme employs more than 800 attorneys, and more than 600 support staff. The firm is well known, especially for its very effective use of technology, and its uncanny ability to snatch the most prestigious clients away from competing firms.

Part of the firm’s success comes from its realization that it’s not just a law firm; it’s also a publisher, and it knows a publisher would be a fool (a penny-wise sort of fool) not to employ editors and artists.

____________
The real function of Acme Law, LLP is to avoid stepping on overly sensitive toes. As I see it, everything’s fair game for criticism — the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. But many involved in law firm publishing don’t see it that way. To them, it’s OK to comment on good works, but it’s not OK to comment on extremely mediocre works. They say that’s rude.

So, I identify the publishers of works I praise, and — as much as I can — I attribute works in need of repair to Acme (even though they belong to real world law firms). But the subterfuge is not always possible. I can’t just grab a real firm’s copy and slap Acme’s logotype on it.

A skilled and experienced editor offers advice to those who could use one (an editor, that is).
