Law Firms and Aggressive Racial Preferences

John Leo, columnist for U.S. News and World Report, has this interesting piece about law firms and the downside of aggressive racial preferences.

Here’s a quote: “Blacks account for only 1 or 2 percent of law students with high grades, yet they make up 8 percent of lawyers hired by large law firms.”

Interesting math! Interesting that when it comes to employment opportunities for attorneys, the math is much more important than the law.

And there’s this article by Stuart Taylor of the National Journal. Taylor claims that the current crop of racially based hiring practices of law firms, “are at best a mixed blessing — and are often a curse — for their recipients.”
