Pre-pre-law Diversity
Saturday, July 29th, 2006The Salt Lake Tribune has this article about public charter schools. The article — State laws affect diversity of charter schools — suggests that charter schools are “siphoning away affluent, white students” from nearby public schools.
What has this to do with law firm diversity? Well . . . to become a lawyer, you have to attend a school and earn a J.D., and if you want to do very well, it wouldn’t hurt to attend a darned good school like Harvard, and get to know certain people who might be willing to help you. Before you can do that, you need to attend a high school. The better the school, the better your chances.
That’s all.
Extra: In this article (dated 30 July) from the Salt Lake Tribune, Latino activist Frank Cordova says charter schools are a mechanism for white flight as the majority population leaves traditional public schools “to get away from the minority” population. Also, state senator Howard Stephenson, who backed legislation creating charter schools, said he doesn’t know how to increase diversity in charter schools and isn’t sure it’s necessary.
