  • developed the company’s first press kit;
  • designed and developed the company’s courseware;
  • designed and developed context-sensitive, Web-based help system.

May 1998 — Nov 2001: Managing Editor, Collabria

Collabria was a B2B ASP serving the commercial printing market. I was responsible for all product documentation and training materials.

  • lead the tech pubs effort;
  • managed development of all product documentation and technical guides;
  • developed and maintained tech pubs procedures, styles, and templates;
  • managed the efforts of freelance writers, editors, and artists;
  • developed course and course evaluation materials for professional services;
  • developed a Web-based, on-line Help system.

1988 — 1998: President, Technical Publishing Services

TPS started by offering production services to textbook publishers. That led to the development of software products for the pre-press market, which became the firm’s main business.

  • managed the marketing effort — advertising, media, branding, press releases, collateral, mailings, trade shows and trade journal articles;
  • managed the development, production, and maintenance of all software and documentation;
  • represented the firm at trade shows, conferences, and seminars as well as through speaking engagements and trade journal articles;
  • negotiated resale agreements with leading graphic arts suppliers and equipment manufacturers;
  • worked with counsel while a plaintiff in several cases of copyright infringement;
  • wrote software license agreements.

1984 — 1988: Senior Editor, Macmillan Publishing Company

I was responsible for developing computer-related products for the school division.

  • worked with subject-area editors to design and develop courseware to accompany basal programs;
  • managed vendors and freelancers;
  • trained sales staff and consultants in presenting and supporting computer-related products;
  • managed the development of a classroom management system and of a computer literacy program, including textbook, activities, and integrated software.

1980 — 1984: Associate Editor, Merrill Publishing Company

I started with Merrill as an editorial trainee in the math department.

  • assisted in the writing, editing, and production of mathematics textbooks and ancillaries;
  • developed educational software to accompany a textbook series;
  • developed software to automate a variety of editorial and production tasks;
  • designed, edited, and produced a text on BASIC programming;
  • wrote and produced Teachers Guides and Solutions Manuals.

Teaching Experience

1987 — 1988: Adjunct Professor of Computer Graphics; Pratt Institute
I taught computer graphics to art students. Topics included graphics, typography, page layout, and — for those few students with a taste for the technical — a touch of PostScript programming.

1982 — 1983: Computer Programming Instructor; Grandview Heights High School
I taught programming in BASIC to high school students. The purpose of this course was to help design a textbook on BASIC.

1978 — 1980:  Mathematics Lecturer; Ohio State University
I taught linear algebra to freshmen students. The math department chairman asked me to teach this course while I was still an undergraduate.
